What is Full-Colour CMYK Printing and Why is it Important?
Full-colour CMYK printing is the preferred printing process for achieving brilliant colour results worldwide(*1). Do you ever notice that what is designed on a computer sometimes prints as a slightly different hue? One of the reasons this may have occurred is the graphic design software used. It is wise to check what the software uses i.e., RGB, CMYK.
Viewing the final proof on your screen, being a light source, will always look brighter than ink on paper.
What Does CMYK Stand For?
The acronym, CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key. Key is the term used for Black(*1).
Why is CMYK Full-Colour Printing Important for Business?
If you are printing any kind of company or business media, the brand colours must print as true as possible to maintain brand recognition(*1). Imagine how strange it’d be if the golden arches on a McDonald’s fries box printed more orange than yellow!
In your company’s style guide, there will be guidance on things like font, font size, logo placement and size, and colours. Colour codes give designers and printers more control over the end result of the printed materials(*1). You may find CMYK, Pantone PMS, Hex or RGB codes in your company’s style guide. For example, the McDonald’s yellow is CMYK 0 19 89 0(*2).
Can Paper Stock and Celloglaze Impact Printed Colours?
The vibrancy of the colours used in your printing will be affected by the type of paper stock used(*3). For example, a premium white cardstock gives graphics and text a super sharp finish when printed with CMYK. Stock such as uncoated paper and card has no coating, therefore more porous. The ink absorbs into the paper rather than sitting on top, as on coated art paper. Printing on uncoated paper, depending on the quality, can result in less vibrant colours. Some designers prefer this look.
Types of celloglaze can also make graphics, photos and text more (or less) vibrant. Glossy finishes certainly help colours pop and are used extensively on booklet covers. However, if you want a more understated look, matt celloglaze is brilliant, giving the cover a satin look.
