Business gets a head start at Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour to undergo major redevelopment.

Sydney is looking for new ways to maintain its reputation as a premiere location with news that the harbour city is set to undergo a major urban renewal project.

And what better way to capitalise on the new projects, which are set to take place in the new look conventions centres, than by handing international guests bona fide Sydney business cards?

Developments at key sites such as Barangaroo, the Frank Gehry building being built at Broadway and the Darling Walk, which is directly opposite the Sydney Convention Centre, are helping to beautify the CBD.

And it seems that this is only the beginning of a major overhaul of Australia's largest commercial centre.

The New South Wales government has also called on private developers to get in on the act and transform Darling Harbour.

A reported 12 hectares of land will be made available in order to create an internationally regarded exhibition and conventions precinct.

In response to premier Barry O'Farrell's announcement earlier this month, the local chamber of commerce has been quick to praise the plan.

Patricia Forsythe, executive director of the Sydney Business Chamber, asserted: "The government is on the right track with their approach to renewing our convention and entertainment facilities at Darling Harbour."

She also acknowledged the difficulties Darling Harbour business district has encountered on its path to urban renewal.

"Sydney has been hampered by the lack of space available for some of the largest international conventions and exhibitions. That has translated into lost economic opportunities for the city," she said.

Details of the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct redevelopment reveal the full extent of an ambitious business plan - which includes 40,000 square metres of exhibition space, music, sport and entertainment venues, as well as upmarket eateries, boutiques and improved transport links linkages.

The project could inject new life into the CBD and encourage visitors to view Sydney as a viable tourist and commercial destination by showcasing its technical innovation, infrastructure and local business.
