Business cards should communicate a clear message

While the content of a business card is obviously vital - you're unlikely to convert leads into clients without listing your company name, telephone number, email address or website - it should not be underestimated just how important it is to put thought into the design and layout as well.

You will come across potentially useful contacts who are just as busy as you are and who will probably not give much future thought to you or your business card unless both have made a strong first impression.

Since there is a limited amount of time that you can expect to hold somebody's attention, graphic designer Oliver Munday implores owners and managers to make sure PR materials are both eye-catching and visually effective.

Writing for Business News Daily, Munday asserted: "If you can spark them to want to keep it or keep you on file, then people will not forget it and that's the ultimate goal."

He recommended that the design in particular must engage people and make a connection with them.

"If you can bring an emotion like humour out of someone I think that is a small success. You can break down some of the walls and become a little more personal with someone you don't know," he said.

This does not mean your Sydney business card needs to be hilarious or contain a witty anecdote, but by adding something a little different or slightly amusing - in the form of an image, tagline or quote - you increase the chance of someone remembering who you are and caring about what you do.

A simple card can be more effective than a complicated one, Munday believes, but the key point is for it to possess one clear idea and message for the contact to take away from the meeting. 

"It's not about letting the way it's made or the production of it get in the way of what is there. At the end of the day it is about a good idea and communicating that idea," he said.

Images, logos or artwork can be useful additions, as long as they are relevant to the product or service being offered rather than an unnecessarily flamboyant or distracting extra.
