Business cards 'can help you get your first job'

Interns may wish to use business cards to build their contact base

Establishing connections by exchanging business cards with colleagues while completing an internship could be an excellent way of landing your first job out of university, one student asserted.

Speaking to ABC News, Ashley Simakas of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee commented that she managed to get her first job out of uni thanks to the contacts she made while completing two internships during her studies.

Rather than risk the chance of submitting a resume and having it get "lost in the mix", Ms Simakas instead opted to use the contacts she had developed during her internship to help her land her new role.

"When I would meet people in the company or work with different managers, I would make sure to establish a contact with them by getting a business card or an email address," she explained.

Ms Simakas was one of more than 230 interns at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, but she believes she stood out from the competition thanks to her networking efforts.

Career expert Lindsey Pollack recently asserted that university students should seriously consider getting business cards as they venture into the world of networking, as their potential colleagues and employers will "assume everyone has a card".

Students can discuss their business cards options with their Sydney printing service, but wise information to include is an email address, telephone number and extras including your university name, your field of study or your graduation date.
