Networking 'a key focus for managers'

A business card can be considered an extension of your firm's 'shop window'

Business managers have identified networking as a key focus for 2011 and Ben Walker of the Chartered Management Institute offers his top tips for making an impression at a business or social event.

He advises that networkers come up with a brief description of what they do, rather than recite their entire job description to everyone they meet. This can open up a dialogue and simplifies conversation.

Bringing the right publicity material can also help you stand out from the crowd. Mr Walker advised treating your business cards "like a shop window".

He explained: "If they’re tatty, unclear or poorly designed, then you are unlikely to get many customers."

Furthermore, he added, any supplementary materials - including leaflets - should be attention-grabbing, clear and uncluttered.

Mr Walker also advised that at networking events, it is just as important to listen to others as well as present your own sales pitch. He advised that by keeping quiet and maintaining an interest in what a potential contact is saying, you may learn something new that can help your own business grow.
