NZ forum reveals commitment to eco-friendly paper practices

The NZPF forum aims to promote sustainable paper usage in the country.

The Paper Stewardship Scheme was launched in Wellington last week by the New Zealand Paper Forum (NZPF).

The project aims to identify and implement plans for sustainable paper use that businesses and the community could adopt.

PrintNZ chief executive Joan Grace spoke of the organisation’s committment, stating: "By ensuring good information is available to those involved at all stages of the product life cycle, we can ensure that paper and paperboard products are managed with the least environmental impact."

The Paper Story is an online publication produced by the organisation that provides resources for those who may want further information. Ms Grace stated that the "publication highlights paper’s environmental credentials and sets out what businesses and consumers can do to help recover and reuse even more paper that is otherwise thrown away".

Each year, 72 per cent of paperboard is recycled, which is roughly equivalent to 671,000 square metres of landfill space saved, according to the latest figures from the NZPF.

The group also noted that although many businesses are moving online, education and awareness may reinforce the need for resourceful and sustainable paper use.
Companies may wish to promote environmentally-friendly business practices to make their office sustainable.

Green business cards, the use of recycled paper in printers and photocopiers and supporting green friendly printing services could also contribute to an eco-friendly workplace.
