Business cards 'never go out of style'

Business cards can help you make a great first impression

Business cards remain the best way to introduce yourself at professional networking events, in spite of the rising popularity of digital media.

Freelance journalist Farah Zahadi Moazzam commented that while LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are all useful networking tools for interacting with contacts you have already made, business cards allow you to make a good first impression.

"You may meet some people once, say in a conference," the reporter told Dawn.com. "That is where a business card in hand will be better than any profile on any number of websites."

Online and offline marketing materials need not be exclusive - there are a number of ways to ensure your efforts work together to cross-promote your brand.

Including URLs for professional social media pages, blogs or company websites on printed materials - including recycled business cards, posters, flyers or leaflets -can encourage people you meet at trade events to learn more about your company online after your initial introduction.

Following up on business card exchanges is one of the best ways to make the most of trade shows and other corporate events, according to Auckland-based general manager Steve O'Connor.

He suggested that attendees make daily notes on the business cards they collect to better prioritise who to follow up with when you return to the office.
