A 'downsized bag' should include room for business cards

Shoulder bags should have room for business cards

Many office workers carry a laptop or netbook computer to work, but large over-the-shoulder bags can create back problems and other issues.

The New York Times' Gadgetwise blog suggested that as many laptops are getting smaller and lighter, people may wish to downsize their bags accordingly.

While it is still important to have enough space to carry all your gadgets, documents and recycled business cards, it may no longer be necessary to carry bags "big enough to hold a bull mastiff", according to blogger John Biggs.

He suggested that instead, professionals should look to Japan for laptop bag inspiration, as many new models are large enough to fit a 13-inch computer but slimline enough to carry around for most of the day.

Mini pockets for business cards are an essential feature, as you will always have them to hand and know exactly where you can find them.

Some networking experts advise carrying around an essential toolkit of personal marketing materials, as you never know when the opportunity to make a new contact will arise.

In addition to your business cards, this could include a hard copy of your resume, a one-page personal profile and any other relevant materials - all of which can easily be carried in a compact bag.
