Networking with business cards 'never goes out of style'

Food areas at networking events may be good places to make a connection

Despite the rising popularity of professional social networking sites including LinkedIn, online interaction is no substitute for a traditional face-to-face meeting, a leadership development consultant has asserted.

Writing for the Democrat and Chronicle, Tina Smagala - who is also the regional director for RV Rhodes LLC - commented that business cards have an important role to play in the networking world.

She advised nervous networkers to approach others who are standing alone - or at a common place, such as the refreshments table - and greet them "with a smile".

A firm handshake and an enthusiastic, short introduction is a good way to break the ice, while asking open-ended questions may be one strategy that keeps the conversation going.

Finally, Ms Smagala suggested closing the conversation on a positive note and exchanging business cards so you can stay in touch in the future.

Green business cards can help you stand out at a networking event - and choosing this eco-friendly option may reinforce your integrity to your potential contact.

You may also want to make a few notes on the back of their card so that you can remember the key points of the conversation and refer back to them if you choose to contact the person again.
