Dating rules can apply to jobs

Dating rules may also apply to job applications.

It is Valentine's Day, which for busy career professionals means that you may be trading in a candle-lit dinner for a lunch date interview.

At least this is the view of one single New Yorker, who works as a professional training and coaching advisor, and is keen to get people talking about the relationships that really matter.

In a post for social network LinkedIn business professional and entrepreneur, Nicole Williams, offers her top tips for jobseekers with interviews on the cards this February 14.

Ms Williams writes: "It's been a few years since I've been on the dating scene, but I never departed for a date without the essential precursor to heading out with any new beau: doing the Google check."

The social media enthusiast then goes on to explain how people can apply dating techniques to the job market and in the process improve their chances of securing employment.

In addition to completing the necessary background research Williams says social media and online resources are an important part of perception management that should be optimised in order to boost your employment prospects.

Number one of the modern jobseekers check list is looking good, but not only in the interview, these days updating your profile picture is about more than just impressing friends.

"You may think you look fantastic in that picture that your friend took of you back in 1989, but unless you have been able to retain that same youthful glow (… not likely), you're better off using a photograph that is no more than five years old," she wrote.

Williams feels that it is necessary to make sure your online and real world image match, especially at a time when HR companies scan these sites for facts.

When the time of the interview finally arrives, it might be a good idea to make sure the details on your eco business card match that of your LinkedIn profile or other social media network in order to avoid any unwanted confusion.
