'Keep networking tools handy at all times'

Networking professionals always have business cards on hand

It is a wise idea to keep networking material - including business cards - on hand at all times, as you never know when an opportunity may present itself.

Writing for North Jersey Jobs, career coach Eli Amdur emphasised the importance of keeping a well-stocked networking 'tool bag' ready for immediate use.

Networking opportunities sometimes happen unexpectedly, so it is important to prepare. You may want to rehearse a smooth, memorable and well thought out 15-second "elevator speech" and carry business cards with your most up-to-date personal details in case you run into a useful contact, he suggested.

In addition, successful networkers are rarely without a hard copy of their resume, as well as a one-page personal profile. Mr Amdur suggested storing backup versions of these essential documents in your email account and on a flash drive in case you need multiple copies at short notice.

A good attitude and a professional appearance round out your 'tool bag', which Mr Amdur advises to keep "full at all times".

You may also wish to consider what your networking documents are made of. Opting for recycled business cards, for example, could project an image of accountability and credibility.
