Sydney awards opportunity for business promotion

An upcoming event celebrates Sydney business innovation

The upcoming 2011 City of Sydney Business Awards are set to be a great opportunity for small businesses looking to raise their profile.

Printing companies in the city are likely to be running hot to prepare business cards for entrants in the competition, which is offering around $60,000 worth of prizes.

Last year's event saw 600 nominations and 41,000 votes from the public, according to Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"With more than in last year’s competition, the awards are a fantastic opportunity for Sydney's small businesses to increase their brand exposure, expand their customer network and take their business ideas to the next level," she said.

Previous winners include Republica Coffee, the 2009 Best Fair Trade Business award winner, which now supplies Jetstar’s domestic and international flights.

There are 22 small business categories including small bars, retail fashion, restaurants and cafes, cultural and creative services, tourism, bicycle businesses, health and fitness, and IT.

New award categories for 2011 are Online Business for internet-based marketing and sales businesses and the ANZ Fast Starter Award, which recognises fast-growing businesses with an annual turnover of more than $5 million.

Businesses must be Sydney located, employ fewer than 200 full-time employees, be independently owned and have been in operation for at least six months.
