Award ceremonies can be a great networking opportunity

Industry award functions can be a great networking opportunity.

The nation's highest ranking female police officer has been named this year's Telstra Australian businesswoman.

And while the top gong may have gone to Catherine Burn, who joined the Police Force at just 19 years of age, she was not the only person to walk away with a prize.

The event, which is in its 17th year, is also a great opportunity for women in the workplace to meet other high achievers.

"The 2011 winners and finalists are amazing business women who inspire others and deserve recognition for their leadership achievements," said award ambassador Kate McKenzie.

"They are outstanding role models for all women in business."

With a focus on networking it is not surprising that so many companies nominate members of their own workforce to take part.

Many participants have a long working history and may have experience in a number of different fields, as well as at different office headquarters.

This means that in addition to having close work relations with people from within their own industry there is also a high chance they have crossed paths with similarly passionate people from other sectors.

However, simply attending an awards night does not necessarily mean that you will make fantastic business contacts.

A lot depends on the individuals who are present, as well as your own can-do attitude and ability to mix well with individuals from different backgrounds.

In order to make a great first impression and wow spectators with your business acumen, it is a good idea to get the simple things right.

Make sure you have picked out a well chosen outfit that will blend in with what other guests are wearing, as well as elegant jewellery.

It may also be a good idea to consult a printing service about business cards before heading out to any major events to make sure that you are ready to meet and greet people with your best foot forward.
