Introducing Embossing – a Practical & Beautiful Business Card Finish
Embossing raises certain parts of your business card design to create texture and sophistication(*1). It greatly enhances designs by adding interesting and fascinating textures.
• Feel the difference of high-quality embossed card stock.
• 360gsm satin artboard with matt cello glaze.
• Full CMYK colour print on both sides.
Prefer other artboards or finishes? Want gold or coloured foil applied to the raised areas? We are happy to print to your requirements.
Our graphic designers can help you create the whole design or just the embossing layer. Fast turnaround and expert advice on all designing and printing.
What is embossing?
Embossing is similar to thermography raised printing and spot UV printing on business cards and other print materials. However, rather than adding a layer to the cardstock, embossing shapes the paper using a metal plate and embossing machine. The raised area can then be left as it is or special finishes like gold or metallic foil can be applied for an extra special effect(*1-3).
• Use embossing as a lovely alternative or addition to using ink — especially on logo designs.
• Create a high-end, prestigious finish to your marketing collateral.
• Do not print text smaller than 14 points. We do not recommend smaller font sizes for embossing as the registration has a tolerance of around 5mm which is significant for text.
What can be Embossed on Business Cards?
Letters, braille, shapes, patterns, and graphics can all be embossed to complement your business card design and make it more appealing.
What is the Difference Between Embossing and Debossing?
Embossing and debossing follow a similar process but yield opposite results. As mentioned above, embossing pushes the cardstock up to create a ‘bump.’ Debossing, being the opposite, creates an indent in the cardstock. See the image above for parts of the design that are indented and raised.
Why Choose Embossing for Your Business Cards?
To be outstanding of course! Additionally, embossing braille onto business cards is perfect for connecting with vision-impaired and blind customers, stakeholders, and your future business partners.
We can also help with designing business cards that appeal to those with colour blindness and other vision impairments. Connect with us today to design a gorgeous business card that can connect with anyone who gets their hands on it!
How We Create Embossed Business Cards
Once your business cards are printed, embossing (raising the surface) is produced using two ‘dies’ with your custom shape.
What are Embossing Dies?
Dies are metal plates with your design engraved into them. One die is raised and the other is recessed so they fit snugly together. When the business card is pressed between them, the raised die forces the card into the recessed one to create the embossed impression.
Finally, the reverse side shows the debossed impression. That leads us to debossing. For a more precise and smooth debossed effect, the process is carried out in reverse order as the ‘hit’ on the stock on the correct side is cleaner and looks ‘deeper’ than the reverse of an embossed card.
